Updates on my research

I'll be leaving for Singapore for SMART'04 Conference next Tuesday. For any of you who may be interested in the paper which I'll be presenting can have a look here. It may also be very interesting to listen to the audio clip on the website.

Title:
A new control system for fast motion control of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator wires

Speaker:
Yee Harn Teh, Ph.D. student @ InfoEng. RSISE, ANU

When:
Thursday 11th November 11:30-12:00

Where:
RSISE seminar room, ground floor, building 115 cnr. North and Daley Roads, ANU

Abstract:
SMA actuators are generally considered to be slow and inaccuratedue to their inherent thermal hysteresis in the phase transformation. To improve the speed and accuracy, we propose using the resistancemeasurement feedback incorporated as a current limiter mechanismin a motion control system. Two different motion controllers havebeen considered. The first is based on Grant's two-stage relaycontroller and the second a modified proportionalcontroller. Results showed that the speed of response had beenincreased compared to when the current limiter mechanism was notin place. Experimental results also show that the current limitercan be used to increase the speed of SMA actuators with differentmotion controllers. Results also show that the limit cycle is amanifestation of the motion controllers used and if a sufficientlygood motion controller is used, such as the modified proportionalcontroller, the limit cycle can be further reduced.

Biography:
Yee Harn is a first-year Ph.D. student at the Department of Information Engineering at RSISE under the supervision of Dr. Roy Featherstone. This seminar is a 'test-run' oral presentation for the SMART'04 Conference (The First International Conference on Shape Memory And Related Technologies) he will be attending on 24th-26th November.
